Syn. Stipa arundinacea. Superb ornamental grass, forming arching clumps of shiny, narrow, evergreen leaves which assume lovely red and orange tints in winter. Chionochloa conspicua

From New Zealand, and quite different to C. rubra. Forming a tussock, this has harsh, broader foliage of tawny-green, and prominent flowering plumes of creamy-yellow. Sheltered, well-drained position. Sun. Few only.

A lovely species from New Zealand, forming dense tussocks of slender but stiff, inrolled leaves, dull reddish-ochre, with a gray-blue reverse. Gritty, well-drained/but moisture retentive soil. Full sun. [30 x 24"] 76 x 61cm. Rarely mentioned for its glittery panicles in evidence all summer into September, but it takes two or three years for the plant to mature before you'll get this stunning display.

Miscanthus

Invaluable bold clump forming grasses with upright stems and attractive colored silky [and later fluffy] crimped plumes in mid-late summer or autumn. Lasting well into winter, they provide good autumn hues to add cheer to the garden. All are easy in good moist but well-drained soil and sun. Cut down to ground level before the new growth commences in early spring.

Miscanthus floridulus

Forms slow spreading clumps of matt bluish-green leaves with a white mid-rib. Does not normally flower in Britain. With relatively wide leaves, it has quite a sub-tropical appearance. Good accent plant/specimen. In a sheltered position and with optimum growing conditions can apparently achieve [9'] Fertile/well-drained soil. Sun. Divisions.

Neat tufts of conspicuously cream-striped leaves, with purplish panicles suspended on creamy-yellow stems. In Autumn the whole plant turns bright butter-yellow. July/Oct. Moist soil. Sun. Deciduous. [24"] 61cm. AGM. Divisions.

Molinia caerulea subsp. arundinacea Skyracer

Aptly named, with plum color inflorescences reaching skywards on tall 210cm stems above clumps of bluish-green leaves. Good yellow and orange autumn color. August into September. Moist soil. Sun.

Panicum virgatum Rubrum

Upright habit with green leaves, and airy panicles of long lasting flowers in late summer. Most effective in autumn, when the clumps of foliage turn red. July/Oct. Any soil. Sun. Deciduous. [3'] 91cm.

Panicum virgatum Shenandoah

This is an exceptional newly introduced switchgrass, which is unmatched for its superb late summer foliage. Commencing green in early summer, the leaves have dark-red tones by July, and the whole leaf turns a deep burgundy by September. From a distance could easily be mistaken for Imperata Red Baron. The free flowering airy spiklets [lovely in arrangements fresh or dried] are red too. Of upright growth and easy in any soil in a sunny position. Wind and salt tolerant. Choice. 9cm pots. Note! this batch contains some peat in the compost.

Definitely the most talked about grass last year. Upright robust [3'] 91cm. stems clasped along their length with broad deep-burgundy leaves terminating with stout [12"] deep-burgundy flowering spike. By September these are coated with cream pollen. Treat as an annual and save seed 30% of which should come true. Superb for the patio and great for flower arranging.

Definitely the most elite of the bottle brushes, with maroon foliage, and arching soft red-purple bristles on [3'] 91cm. stems. August onwards. Stunning as a container plant for a hot spot in full-sun. Tender, but well worth every effort to over-winter it. 9cm pots.

Phaenosperma globosa

Broad pleated leaves and erect flower plumes composed of pendent green spiklets turning bead-like as the season progresses. The latter remained intact here all winter last year. Sheltered position. Part-shade. [2'+] 61cm.

Poa labillardieri

From Australia, and as tough as old boots this is an attractive tussock grass with thread-like narrow blue-gray leaves, and airy purplish-gray flowers June/Oct. Well-drained position. Full sun. [3-4'] 91-122cm.

Restio tetraphyllus

Erect, slender wand-like noded [like a bamboo] stems, clothed in bright-green thread like evergreen leaves. From Tasmania where it is much used as cut foliage. Well-drained, but moisture retentive soil. Sun. Hardy to -7 degrees C. or over-winter undercover.

Schoenoplectus lacustris subsp tabernaemontani Albescens

An aquatic rush, with superb tubular stems of cream, with vertical, narrow, soft-green stripes. Plant in up to 6" deep in water. Sun. [4'+] 122cm.

Schoenoplectus lacustris subsp tabernaemontani Zebrinus

Another superb rush with tubular stems transversely banded with creamy-white alternating with gray-green. Plant up to 6" deep in water. Sun. [4'+] 122cm.

Schoenus pauciflorus

Bog rush. A New Zealander, forming a dense clump of stiff upright very dark red-purple needle fine foliage. Boggy type conditions. [1'+] 30cm.

Seslaria sadleriana

Rigid tufts of olive-green leaves and dense creamy flower heads in June/July. Evergreen. Dry position. Full sun. Calcareous soil. [9"] 20cm.
Setaria palmifolia

Setaria palmifolia

Dramatic evergreen grass forming clumps of bold broad arching pleated leaves to [3'] 91cm. with slender spikes held above on 6' stems late-summer. onwards. The foliage becomes suffused with red if the plant is exposed to sun. Needs a minimum temperature of 7C over-winter. We take ours into the house where it flowers right through to the spring.

Arching yellow margined leaves, with tall stems of drooping purple flower spikes. Foliage bright yellow/autumn. Can spread in wet soil, but grows perfectly well in fertile soil. Avoid growing near pond liners. [5' x 3'] 152 x 91cm. Divisions
