A lovely plant, displaying a two tone effect, with young pale-lilac buds, deepening to mauve flowers. Long flowering period. May/July and later. Good soil. Sun. [30"] 76cm. Dead head for repeat flowering.

Polygonatum

Solomon's Seal. Rhizomatous woodland perennials, much valued for their foliage and pendant, though sometimes erect, bell-shaped flowers. These are usually followed by black or red berries in autumn. All fare best in fertile, humus-rich, moist, but well-drained soil. We will be adding more to this list in the future.

Polygonatum verticillatum Rubrum

Choice woodlander, with upright stems clothed in whorls of narrow foliage, and mauve-purple bells April/June. An established clump looks most impressive. [5'] 152cm.

Liquorice Fern. An easily grown hardy fern, with divided, herring-bone, mid-green fronds. Good drainage, with free air movement around fronds. [1'] 30cm.

Polystichum setiferum

Name doubtful, and still to be confirmed. But still one of my favorite ferns, with very handsome, deep-green fronds, producing young plantlets at the tips.. Easy in any good humus enriched soil. Shade/part-shade. Evergreen. [2'] 61cm. AGM.

Excellent for the front of the border, trough or tub. A dwarf evergreen fern, with erect divided and crested fronds. Hardy.

Polystichum setiferum plumoso-multilobum

Syn. Polystichum setiferum plumoso-densum. Extremely handsome fern composed of dense evergreen, arching very feathery fronds, which when mature forms a very attractive tiered effect. Bulbiferous if well grown. Tolerant of lime. Retentive but well-drained

Mother Shield fern. Very beautiful, dark evergreen fern, with striking croziers in Spring. It has the obliging habit of producing proliferous buds at the end of each frond. Well-drained, retentive soil. Shade/north wall. [2'] 61cm.

An Oriental fern, much valued for its neat low-growing habit, composed of its small evergreen fronds, emerging purplish, and maturing to pale green on dark upright stems. Prefers a cool, shady spot. [1'] 30cm.

This vigorous new P. longifolia hybrid has stunning silvered green leaves, with very light marginal spotting and large violet-blue flowers February - May. The foliage just keeps getting better and better as the year progresses. Unlike others, do not cut back foliage after flowering. Nice! No trouble with mildew on this so far.
